Stories have the power to move people.

Athlete profiles aired during the Summer Olympics are great examples of compelling storytelling. Hearing about the athletes’ dedication, passion, and resiliency kept me glued to the TV to cheer them on.

Compelling narratives don’t just inform; they motivate and engage the audience. To that, consider the following tactics: 

  • WIIFTA (What’s in it for the audience) – Focus on the needs of your audience, not your own.
  • Start strong – Grab the audience's attention right away. Begin with a powerful statement, question, or statistic.
  • Tell a story – Appeal to the audience’s emotions to make the message more relatable and memorable.
  • Get to the point – Avoid unnecessary details that can dilute your message.
  • Use vivid language – Paint a picture with your words. 
  • Inspire action - Create a sense of urgency to prompt immediate responses.
  • Use repetition - Reiterate key points to make important ideas stick, especially in speeches.
